A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for the daughter of the woman at the centre of President Park Geun-hye’s corruption scandal.

한국 법원이 박근혜 대통령 부패 스캔들의 핵심에 있는 최순실의 딸에게 체포영장을 발부했다.

Prosecutors issued the warrant for Chung Yoo-ra, the 20-year-old daughter of Choi Soon-sil, Ms Park’s friend who is in custody in an influence-peddling scandal that led Parliament to vote to impeach the President.

검찰이 국회가 박 대통령 탄핵 가결로 이끈 영향력 행사 스캔들로 현재 수감 중인 박 대통령의 친구 최순실의 딸 정유라(20)에게 영장을 발부했다.

Lee Kyu-chul, a spokesman for South Korea’s special prosecutor’s office, told a news conference they would be asking for the cooperation of German prosecutors to arrest Ms Chung, who they believe is in Germany.

이규철 특검 대변인은 독일에 있다고 추정되는 정유라 씨를 체포하기 위해 독일 검찰에 협조 요청을 하겠다고 기자회견장에서 밝혔다.

Ms Chung faces several allegations, including obstruction of justice, the special prosecutor’s office said.

정 씨는 공무집행방해를 포함한 몇 가지 혐의를 받고 있다고 특검 측이 밝혔다.

Lawyers for Ms Chung could not be reached immediately.

Ms Chung’s mother is accused of colluding with the President to pressure big businesses to donate to foundations set up to back government policies.

She has faced one day of trial, charged with abuse of power, extortion and attempted fraud.

On December 9 South Korea’s Parliament voted overwhelmingly to impeach Ms Park over the scandal.

The constitutional court will decide whether to uphold the motion, which would see Ms Park become the country’s first elected leader to be pushed from office in disgrace.

Ms Chung, an equestrian athlete who competed in the 2014 Asian Games and won a gold medal in a team competition, sparked public ire earlier this year when it emerged she had received special treatment from the prestigious Ewha Womans University.

2014 아시안게임에 출전해 단체전에서 금메달을 딴 승마선수인 정유라는 올해 초 명성이 높은 이화여자대학교에서 특혜를 받은 것으로 나타나 대중의 분노를 촉발시켰다.

Her admission to the university was subsequently cancelled.

She was also stripped of her high school diploma for fabrication of grades and attendance, according to the Seoul education office.

Earlier, investigators raided the office of the world’s third-largest pension fund, the National Pension Service (NPS), over possible corruption links.

오전에 수사관들이 부패와의 연루 가능성 때문에 세계에서 3번째로 큰 연금펀드인 국민연금(NPS)사무실을 급습해 압수수색을 벌였다.

A special prosecutor investigating the scandal is looking into NPS’s decision last year to approve the $11 billion merger of two Samsung Group affiliates, an official from the special prosecutor’s office told Reuters.

스캔들을 수사하고 있는 특검은 작년 삼성그룹 두 계열사의 110억 달러 규모의 합병을 찬성한 국민연금의 결정을 수사하고 있다고 특검 관계자가 로이터 통신에 언급했다.

The NPS was a major shareholder of both affiliates.

The merger was criticised for strengthening the founder family’s control of the group at the expense of other shareholders.

Investigators are examining whether Samsung’s support of a business and foundations backed by Ms Choi may have been connected to NPS’ support of the deal, the prosecution official said.

Prosecutors also raided an office at the Ministry of Health and Welfare, which administers the NPS.

The NPS and Samsung Group could not immediately be reached for comment.
