박근혜 정권이 메르스 종식을 선언하며 문형표 보건복지부 장관을 경질한 가운데 야후뉴스는 4일 로이터 통신의 기사를 받아 문 장관의 경질을 상세히 타전했다.

야후뉴스는 문 장관이 메르스 환자 진료 병원 정보를 공개하지 않아 혼돈을 야기했다고 하면서도 청와대가 그의 경질 사유를 구체적으로 밝히지 않았다고 적었다.

그러면서 메르스 여파로 약화된 한국 경제가 더욱 타격을 받게 됐고, 박근혜의 지지도는 메르스 바이러스 확산 때문에 5년 단임 기간 중 최저점으로 떨어졌다고 덧붙였다.

SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korean President Park Geun-hye removed her minister of health on Tuesday after criticism over the handling of an outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) which killed 36 people as it spread through hospitals.

서울(로이터) – 한국 박근혜 대통령은 병원을 통해 확산되며 36명의 사망자를 낸 중동호흡기증후군(메르스) 발생 당시의 대처를 두고 비난받았던 복지부 장관을 화요일 해임했다.

Minister of Health and Welfare Moon Hyung-pyo, an economist and expert on welfare policy, was criticized for a decision to withhold the names of hospitals that had handled MERS patients in the early stage of the outbreak, fuelling confusion and fear.

경제학자이며 복지 정책의 전문가인 문형표 보건복지부 장관은 발생 초기에 있어 메르스 환자들을 치료한 병원들의 이름을 밝히지 않겠다는 결정으로 혼돈과 공포를 야기하며 비난받았다.

The outbreak has dealt a major blow to an already weakened economy, knocking second-quarter growth to its slowest in more than six years as it closed thousands of schools, kept consumers at home and scared off foreign tourists.

메르스로 인해 수천 개의 학교가 휴교에 들어가고 소비자들이 집에 머물며, 외국 관광객들이 겁을 먹고 오지 않는 가운데 2/4분기 경제 성장이 지난 6여 년에 걸쳐 최저를 기록하며 메르스 발생은 이미 약화된 국가 경제에 큰 타격을 가했다.

Park’s public support dipped to the lowest point in her single five-year term as the MERS virus spread. Park appointed Chung Chin-youb, an orthopedic surgeon and public health expert, as the new health minister, said her spokesman, Min Kyung-wook. He did not give a reason for Moon’s removal.

박근혜의 국민 지지도는 메르스 바이러스 확산 때문에 5년 단임 기간 중 최저점으로 떨어졌다. 박근혜는 정형외과 의사이자 공중보건 전문가인 정진엽을 새로운 복지부 장관으로 임명했다고 민경욱 대변인이 말했다. 그는 문형표의 면직(免職) 이유는 밝히지 않았다.

Last week, South Korea declared it was effectively out of danger from MERS, two months after the first case was reported. The outbreak was brought in to South Korea by a businessman who returned in early May from a trip to the Middle East, where the virus was first identified. The outbreak grew to become the largest outside Saudi Arabia, infecting 186 people and putting nearly 17,000 in quarantine.

한국 정부는 최초의 사례가 보도되고 2달 후인 지난주, 메르스의 위험으로부터 사실상 벗어났다고 공표했다. 그 질병 발생은 지난 5월 초, 바이러스가 처음 확인된 중동지역을 여행하고 돌아온 한 사업가에 의해 한국으로 들어왔다. 그 질병 발생은 186명을 감염시키고 거의 17,000명을 격리시키며 사우디아라비아 지역 밖에서 가장 큰 발생으로 확산됐다.

The MERS virus is of the same family of coronaviruses that triggered a deadly outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2003.

메르스 바이러스는 2003년 중증급성호흡기증후군(SARS, 사스)의 치명적인 발생을 촉발시킨 코로나바이러스와 같은 종이다.

Twelve people remain in hospital in South Korea for MERS although only one is still testing positive for the virus, the Health Ministry said.

메르스로 인해 한국에는 여전히 12명의 환자들이 병원에 입원 중이지만 한 사람만이 여전히 메르스 바이러스에 양성 반응을 보이고 있다고 보건부는 말했다.

No new cases have been reported since July 4. Health experts say the virus has an incubation period of about two weeks.

7월 4일 이후 신규 환자는 보고되지 않고 있다. 보건 전문가들은 메르스 바이러스는 약 2주간의 잠복기를 갖는다고 말한다.
