SEOUL, Aug 13 — The families of victims from South Korea’s ferry disaster said today they would seek Pope Francis’ support for an in-depth probe into the tragedy at a private meeting during his upcoming visit.

8월 13일, 서울 – 세월호 참사 가족들은 다가오는 방한 기간 동안 프란치스코 교황과 사적으로 접견하고 이 비극에 대해 철저한 조사가 있도록 지지해줄 것을 요청하겠다고 오늘 말했다.

The pope, who will arrive in Seoul tomorrow for a five day-trip, is scheduled to meet 10 survivors and victims’ relatives the next day.

내일 닷새 예정으로 서울에 도착할 교황은 모레 10명의 생존자와 사망자 가족을 만나도록 예정돼 있다.

Around 300 people died when the Sewol ferry sank in April—most of them teenagers on a high-school trip.

지난 4월 세월호가 침몰하며 약 300명이 사망했고 그들 대부분은 수학여행을 가던 십대들이었다.

The tragedy, blamed by many on regulatory failings and official incompetence, plunged the entire nation into a lengthy period of mo(u)rning.

많은 사람들이 규제의 실패와 관계당국의 무능력을 그 원인으로 보는 이 비극은 온국가를 긴 기간의 애도에 빠지게 했다.

The relatives are pushing parliament to pass legislation setting up a full, independent inquiry.

가족들은 국회가 전면적이고 독립적인 조사를 착수할 입법안을 통과시킬 것을 추진하고 있다.

The bill is currently stuck in the National Assembly, with ruling and opposition parties deadlocked over what legal powers any inquiry should be given.

이 특별법은 현재 집권당과 야당이 이 조사에 어떤 법적 권한을 부여할지를 두고 합의를 보지 못한 채 현재 국회에서 교착상태에 빠져 있다.

A spokesman for the victims’ families, Yoo Kyung-Geun, said the group of 10 would ask for the Pope’s support for their campaign during a closed-door, half-hour meeting after a mass Friday in the southern city of Daejeon.

가족 10명이 금요일 남쪽 도시 대전에서의 미사 후 교황과 30분간 비공개 접견을 가지고 지지를 요청할 것이라고 유가족 대변인 유경근 씨는 말했다.

“We are hoping to explain ourselves and why we are still fighting like this nearly 120 days after the accident… and ask for his encouragement,” Yoo told reporters.

“우리가 원하는 바를 설명하고 왜 우리가 사고 후 거의 120일이 되도록 이렇게 여지껏 싸우고 있는지 설명드리려 하며… 교황의 격려를 요청할 것이다”고 유 대변인은 기자들에게 말했다.

“We will ask for his attention on the issue and support,” he added.

“우리는 이 사건에 그의 관심과 지지를 요청할 것이다”고 그는 덧붙였다.

Some family members and their supporters have been camped out for weeks in Seoul’s central Gwanghwamun Square where Pope Francis will conduct a vast open-air mass on Saturday.

일부 유가족들과 지지자들은 토요일 프란치스코 교황이 대규모의 야외미사를 진행 할 서울 중심의 광화문광장에서 몇 주째 머무르고 있다.

“I heard that Pope Francis cares for the people who hurt the most and values peace and human rights. Please remember us,” said Kim Young-Oh, one of the relatives at the site.

유가족 중의 한사람인 김영오씨가 “프란치스코 교황은 가장 상처받은 사람들을 염려하고 평화와 인권을 소중하게 여긴다고 들었다. 제발 우리를 기억해달라”고 현장에서 말했다.

Kim, whose daughter died on the Sewol, has been on hunger strike, taking only water and salts for the past month.

세월호 사고로 딸을 잃은 김 씨는 지난 한달 동안 단지 물과 소금을 먹으며 단식투쟁 중이다.

He urged the pope to help put “political pressure” on the government.

그는 교황이 정부에 “정치적 압력”을 가해줄 것을 요구했다.

Yoo said talks were still going on with the Catholic church regarding the protestors’ presence in the square where the Saturday mass will be held.

유 대변인은 토요일 미사가 열릴 광장에 시위자들이 그대로 머무르는 것에 대해 가톨릭 교회와 아직 대화중이라고 말했다.

“We will maintain a presence only to a degree, so as not to disrupt the Pope’s parade and movement within the plaza so that more people can take a look at him,” Yoo said.

“더 많은 사람들이 교황을 볼 수 있도록 광장내의 교황의 가두행진과 움직임에 방해가 되지 않을 만큼만 자리를 지킬 것이다”고 유 대변인은 말했다.
