A total of 43 people in South Korea’s shipping industry have been indicted as a result of a crackdown after April’s Sewol tragedy.

지난 4월 세월호 참사 이후 행해진 수사 결과로 한국 해운업계 관계자 43명이 기소됐다.

Investigators at Incheon District Prosecutors Office have expanded their corruption and malpractice investigation, and suspects, including a former chief of the Korea Shipping Association (KSA), a nonprofit organization in charge of inspecting and certifying vessels on behalf of the government, have been charged with embezzlement, breach of trust and tax evasion.

인천지방검찰청 수사팀은 부패 및 위법행위 수사범위를 확대했고, 정부를 대신해 선박을 점검하고 확인할 책임을 진 비영리 조직인 해운조합 전 이사장을 포함한 혐의자들을 횡령, 배임, 탈세 등의 혐의로 기소했다.

Lee In-soo, former head of the KSA, is under suspicion of embezzling US$251,500 and failing to implement the organization’s duty to supervise ship operators. Yonhap reports that Lee is one case out of a common practice in the country where retired government officials get jobs regulating business interests. Relaxed relationships that can follow, and this is believed to have contributed to lax safety checks on the ferry.

전 한국해운조합 이사장 이인수 씨는 2억6천만원(25만1500 달러) 횡령 및 선박 운항사들을 감독하는 기관으로서의 책무를 다하지 않은 혐의를 받고 있다. 연합뉴스 보도에 따르면, 이 씨와 같이 퇴임한 정부관료가 관련 업계에 취업하는 경우는 한국에서 관행적으로 행해지고 있다. 이로 인해 발생한 정부와 업계 간의 유착관계가 여객선에 대한 허술한 안전점검으로 이어진 것으로 나타났다.

Another KSA official is under suspicion of taking bribes from ship operators in exchange for overlooking various illegal acts of the companies, South Korean prosecutors have said.

또 다른 해운조합 직원은 선박회사들의 다양한 불법행위들을 눈감아주는 조건으로 선주들로부터 뇌물을 받은 혐의를 받고 있다고 한국 검찰이 말했다.

The Sewol ferry capsized off southwestern South Korea on April 16 after making a sharp turn. So far, 294 people have been found dead, with 10 missing presumed dead.

The Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office announced on Wednesday (6 August), that a total of 43 officials have been charged with corruption in connection with the Sewol ferry disaster.

수요일(8월6일) 인천지방검찰청은, 세월호 참사와 관련한 부패 혐의로 기소된 관계자가 총 43명이라고 발표했다.

Of the officials, 18 were detained and 25 officials were charged without being detained.

그 중 18명이 구속됐고, 25명은 불구속 기소됐다.

The Sewol capsized during a routine Incheon-Jeju j crossing on 16 April, leaving 304 of the 476 passengers and crew either dead or missing.

세월호는 4월16일 인천-제주간 정기운항 도중 전복돼 476명의 승객과 선원 중 304명이 사망 또는 실종됐다.

Lee In-Soo, former head of the Korea Shipping Association (KSA) has been charged in relation to the suspected embezzlement of KRW260M ($251,000).

이인수 한국해운조합 전 이사장이 2억6천만원의 횡령 혐의로 기소됐다.

Lee was one of the top officials at South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries before joining the KSA.

이 씨는 한국해운조합에 근무하기 전에 한국 해양수산부의 고위급 관료였다.

Another detained KSA official is suspected of instructing safety inspectors to overlook alleged illegal actions carried out by shipping companies.

또 다른 구속된 해운조합 관계자는 안전 조사관들에게 운항사들이 행한 것으로 추정되는 위법 행위들을 눈감아주도록 지시한 혐의를 받고 있다.

The KSA vice-president has also been charged without detention in relation to suspected fraud.

해운조합의 부회장 또한 사기 혐의로 불구속 기소됐다.

He is alleged to have taken KRW900M of public money. Five safety inspectors who allegedly neglected their duties have also been charged without detention.

그는 공금 9억원을 빼돌린 혐의를 받고 있다. 근무태만 혐의를 받고 있는 다섯 명의 안전검사원들 또한 불구속 기소됐다.

They were suspected of permitting overloaded vessels, including the Sewol, to sail.

그들은 세월호를 포함한 과적된 선박의 출항을 허가한 혐의를 받았다.
