성희롱 못 견딘 여군 장교 자살, 알자지라 보도

세계적인 방송매체인 알자지라가 지난 10월 상관의 지속되는 성희롱을 견디지 못하고 자살한 오 모 대위의 기사를 올려 관심을 끌고 있다.

스트림 커뮤니티 회원인 @Metempirics의 제보에 의한 것이라고 밝힌 이 기사는 오 대위가 1년 가까이 상관으로부터 성희롱을 당했고 가족들에게 성희롱을 당했다는 내용의 유서를 써놓고 자살했다고 전했다. 이 같은 사실이 온라인을 통해 급속하게 전파되었다고 전한 이 기사는 한국 군대에서의 여군들의 근무환경과 처우문제에 대한 문제점들을 짚었다. 문제가 있어도 ‘자리를 잃을 수 있다는 두려움이나 상관이 가지고 있는 막강한 권력에 대한 두려움’으로 발설하기를 주저한다고 지적하며 그 때문에 얼마나 더 많은 사건이 발생하고 있는지 정확히 알 수 없다고 전했다.

자살한 오 대위는 작년 12월 15사단 사단본부 부관참모부로 전입해 온 후 상관인 노 모 소령으로부터 “얼굴에 색기가 흐른다”, “하룻밤만 같이 자면 군 생활 편하게 해주겠다” 등의 요구를 받았지만 이를 거절했고 이에 앙심을 품은 노 소령이 계속해서 야근을 시키며 성관계를 종용한 것으로 알려졌다. 이를 견디지 못한 오 대위는 번개탄을 피우고 자신의 승용차에서 죽음을 택했다. 오 대위는 “10개월 동안 언어폭력, 성추행에 시달렸다. 하룻밤만 자면 모든 게 해결되는데 하면서 매일 야간근무 시켰다. 상관의 여군 비하 발언이 듣기 싫고 영원히 저주하겠다”는 내용의 유서를 남겼고 오 대위의 유가족이 이를 새누리당 손인춘 의원에게 전달해 손의원이 국정감사에서 폭로함으로서 세상에 알려지게 됐다.

 A female soldier in South Korea’s military committed suicide in October after allegedly experiencing sexual harassment from a commanding officer for nearly a year. According to reports, Captain Oh left a suicide note released by her family that disclosed the abuse she suffered. This story has been resonating online for shedding light on the harassment women face in the military.

In Oh’s note, she writes about how she rejected advances made by a ranking officer, and consequently alleges that she was tormented for her decision. Military police have detained the officer and the note is being used as part of the army’s investigation into her death.

남긴 유서에서 오 대위는 상관의 접근을 자신이 어떻게 거절했는지를 적고, 그 때문에 후에 괴롭힘을 당했다고 주장한다. 헌병이 이 상관을 구금했고 이 유서는 오씨의 죽음에 대한 군의 조사의 자료로 사용되고 있다.

The number of women enlisting in South Korea’s military is on the rise in recent years. A study by the National Human Rights Commission disclosed that in 2012 alone, one in ten female soldiers have reported a sexual assault while on duty.

한국군에 입대하는 여군의 숫자가 최근 몇년 동안 증가하고 있다. 국가인권위원회에서 실시한 조사에 의하면 2012년 한해 동안만 10%의 여군들이 근무중에 일어난 성폭력을 신고했다고 한다.

Oh’s suicide follows another controversy over female working conditions in the military. Lieutenant Lee Shin-ae was employed at a military base while seven months pregnant. She fainted following a day’s work and later died of a brain hemorrhage after a caesarean section to save her child. Her death and this case have many calling for better conditions for female soldiers.

오씨의 자살은 군대에서 일하는 여군의 복무환경에 대한 또 하나의 논란이 있은 후에 일어난 일이다. 이신애 중위는 임신 7개월의 몸으로 군에서 복무하고 있었다. 일과가 끝난 후 쓰러졌고, 나중에 아이를 구하기 위해 제왕절개 수술을 받은 후 뇌출혈로 사망했다. 그녀의 죽음과 이 사건으로 인해 여군을 위한 보다 나은 작업환경의 필요성이 많이 제기되고 있다.
