미국 보수를 대표하는 경제전문지인 월스트리트저널이 28일 일주일도 지나지 않아 연이어 한국의 부정선거에 대한 기사를 실어 눈길을 끌고 있다. 특히 이번 기사는 지난 한국시리즈에 박근혜 대통령이 시구한 내용을 소개한 뒤 국정원 및 군의 부정 선거개입, 야당의 국정원 개혁 및 사과 요구 등을 나란히 배치해 사실상 한국의 부정선거에 대한 들끓는 비난 여론에도 불구하고 시구에 나선 박대통령을 꼬집는 것이어서 주목을 받고 있다.

South Korean critics for months have said the ball is in President Park Geun-hye’s court, pressing the leader to respond to their questions about the fairness of the presidential election 10 months ago. On Sunday, Ms. Park tossed a ball back–not at her political foes–but to start a baseball game.
한국의 비평가들은 열 달전에 있었던 대선의 공정성에 대한 질문에 박대통령이 답하도록 압박을 가하면서, 박근혜 대통령이 공을 던질 차례라고 지난 몇 달 동안 말해왔다. 지난 일요일 박대통령이 공을 던지긴 했는데, 정치적 정적을 향해서가 아니고 야구게임을 시작하기 위해서였다.
Ms. Park made a surprise visit to Jamsil Stadium in eastern Seoul to make a ceremonial pitch marking the start of a Korean Series baseball championship game, said her aides.

Carrying a ball and a blue glove inscribed with a national flag, Ms. Park in a black sports jacket stepped onto the field to make the ceremonial pitch. Her ball fell short and bounced once before reaching the catcher’s glove as crowds cheered and clapped. She smiled and waved at the spectators packing the 30,000-seat stadium, local TV showed.

The weekend surprise came amid escalating political tensions with rival parties exchanging barbs over allegations that government agencies had illegally meddled in the December poll to support Ms. Park.
주말의 깜짝 방문은 정부 기관들이 불법으로 박대통령을 지원하기 위해 작년 대선에 개입했다는 혐의들에 대해 여-야가 설전을 주고 받으며 정치적 긴장이 한창 고조되는 가운데 이루어졌다.
Investigations are underway after South Korean military and spy-agency personnel were found to have spread thousands of political Twitter messages that were critical of Ms. Park’s rivals.
한국 군과 국정원 직원들이 박대통령의 경쟁자들을 비난하는 수천개의 정치적 트윗 메세지를 유포한 것이 발견된 이후 현재 조사가 진행중이다.
“It is the President’s turn to give an answer,” Moon Jae-in, a Democratic Party rival in the presidential election, said on Saturday as he pressed Ms. Park to respond to his challenge on Wednesday of the legitimacy of her victory. He had earlier accepted his election defeat.
“이제는 대통령이 답할 차례이다,”라고 민주당의 대선 후보였던 문재인은 지난 수요일 박대통령의 대선 승리의 정통성에 의문을 제기한 것에 대해 박대통령이 답할 것을 요구하며 토요일 말했다. 문후보는 선거 후 선거 패배를 시인한 바 있다.
Critics and opponents of Ms. Park have urged her to reform the spy agency to prevent a repeat of its alleged meddling in politics, but she has yet to make public any reform efforts.
박대통령을 비평하고 반대하는 측에서는 정치개입이 반복되는 일이 없도록 국정원을 개혁할 것을 그간 촉구해 왔지만, 박대통령은 개혁을 위한 어떤 노력도 보인바 없다.
A spokesperson at the presidential office said Ms. Park’s Sunday trip to the baseball game should not be seen as carrying any messages regarding the current political tension. “The President has unflagging support for the nation’s development of sports and culture,” said the spokesperson.
청와대 대변인은 일요일에 있었던 박대통령의 야구경기장 방문에 현재의 정치적 긴장상황과 관련지어 의미를 부여해서는 안 된다고 말했다. “대통령은 국가의 스포츠와 문화의 발전을 꾸준히 지원하고 있다,”라고 대변인이 말했다.
The Democratic Party said in a statement it suspected Ms. Park of “rushing to the baseball field in a bid to stop her popularity from falling” in the wake of the election scandal.
민주당은 박대통령이 선거 스캔들 후에 “지지도가 추락하는 것을 막기 위해 야구장으로 달려간 것”으로 의심이 된다고 성명서에서 말했다.
It is not unprecedented for the President to be a ceremonial baseball pitcher, according to the Korea Baseball Organization. Former presidents Chun Doo-hwan, Kim Young-sam and Roh Moo-hyun threw their first pitches in 1982, 1995 and 2003 respectively.
한국 야구 위원회에 따르면 대통령의 야구 시구는 전례가 없는 것은 아니다. 전두환, 김영삼, 그리고 노무현 전 대통령이 1982년, 1995년 그리고 2003년에 각각 첫번째 시구를 하였다.
